hi hi hi! i did not proofread this email.
first and foremost: i will be at the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) this weekend, august 24 & 25!!! come say hi!!!!! i will have YINZ CITY Vol 1, issue #5, and issue #6!!!! and the usual shit people want to see, like TITTYCHOP BOOBSLASH and MOIST, etc etc. after that, i’ll be at the Pittsburgh Artbook Fair at the end of september, but i’ll mention that again next month or whatever ^_^
YINZ CITY
yahoo issue #6 is done!!!! i had a year to draw this, procrastinated, and then drew it in maybe 6 months. i have no lessons to give you. live your truth or whatever. i initially planned on coloring the cover, but i actually like it b&w. unfortunately the screentone did not come out correctly on this initial printing, alas alas alas.
next newsletter i will share the ONLINE READING spot + the etsy link for physicals. i may return to doing stapled copies from now on. if you want big beautiful perfect-bound copies you gotta subscribe to my patreon or look for a limited number at events or whatever. (i won’t have perfect bound copies at CAKE because i ran out of time, eek)
quilts
“buying fabric online at 3AM cuz i’m sad” quilt (58”x 65”). finished this month; it was 99% done in december 2023, but i fucked up attaching the binding and didn’t feel like seam ripping, so i put the whole quilt in my studio WIP crate and promptly forgot about it for 6 months. now it is done and i am free at last. the charm squares are off Ruby Star Society, the spacers and sashing are from my pile of thrifted fabrics. hand quilted, but i worry about how well the stitches will hold up. it is funny to look at now because i am sooooo much better at piecing now compared to 8-ish months ago.
etc
i don’t know if people actually care about podcast recommendations. i listen to like, 3 “smart lefties talking” podcasts, but i’m not going to tell you about them because lefty podcasts are insufferable no matter how good they are. the only other kind of podcasts i enjoy are narrative ones… horror specifically, for some reason.
Malevolent — i’m obsessed. i recommend this to too many people. the author does every voice, and he gets better at it as the series goes on. it took me forever to realize it feels like listening to a DnD campaign because it is in fact based on one. there were many moments when the lead characters would be faced with two options and pick the one i DIDN’T WANT HIM TO!!! and then we would never receive closure on a host of possibilities. that makes me crazy, but in a good way. includes body horror. “i have a toxic relationship with the mysterious evil(??) entity in my head” romance yaoi. love it.
Silt Verses — just ended, leaving a gaping hole in my heart. i love all the characters and production! the worldbuilding is written in such a way that it feels as though the world goes on, even after the story ends. i got attached to every character and was sad to see the series end, but i wasn’t disappointed. the creators released a tabletop game for it, no surprise. took a few episodes to get me really into it but the acting and production is A++. includes body horror.
The White Vault — the first season actually did creep me out, but from season two on it’s more of a thriller horror situation. still spooky but falls victim to “and now we will explain why this is happening”. still very good!!
Mayfair Watchers Society — anthology series, hit and miss but nothing particularly egregious. includes a shitload of body horror, though it varies per episode. i appreciate how detailed their trigger warnings are ( including “late stage capitalism”).
Old Gods of Appalachia — actually the first podcast that got me into the horror narrative kick. i like its presentation A LOT (narrator is incredible), but it takes paying attention to so i don’t listen to it often, unfortunately. feels like listening to a community elder/storyteller performing a story at a campfire. i often get immersed in the telling, rather than the tale.
The Secret of St. Kilda — just got into this one. it’s a nice blend of humor and horror. a lot of charming characters! nothing especially scary. for some reason it feels like listening to someone play a Nancy Drew game (in a good way). scottish accents.
Derelict — most recent one i picked up. it’s high production quality but not particularly original or groundbreaking. if you like Alien and literally every single scifi movie that has a disaster taking place under water or in space, you’ll probably enjoy it. if you’ve seen enough of those movies, many of the twists are predictable. every time i listen to it i can’t stop thinking [Owen Wilson voice] “Dere-lick my balls”.
ok bye!!!
